Parent resources
Short, practical answers from GROW Children Hospital in Ahmedabad to the questions parents ask most. Each section explains what is usually expected, when to book a visit and which signs need urgent care.
Fever
Parents should consider contacting a pediatrician when fever is persistent, associated with concerning symptoms, or occurs in a young infant. The appropriate response depends on the child's age, temperature and accompanying symptoms.
Cough & Cold
Most coughs and colds in children are viral and improve within one to two weeks with rest and fluids. A pediatric visit is sensible when symptoms last longer than expected, keep recurring or come with fever, ear pain or wheezing.
Breathing Problems
Wheezing, noisy breathing or breathlessness should always be assessed by a doctor. Breathing difficulty can change quickly in children, so it is safer to have a child examined early rather than to wait and watch at home.
Vomiting
Occasional vomiting with a stomach bug usually settles within a day. The main risk is dehydration, so small, frequent sips of fluid matter more than food. See a pediatrician if vomiting persists, fluids are not staying down or your child seems unusually tired.
Diarrhoea
Most diarrhoea in children is caused by infection and improves in a few days. Oral rehydration solution and continued feeding are the mainstays of care. A pediatrician should review a child whose diarrhoea is prolonged, bloody or accompanied by signs of dehydration.
Poor Appetite
Appetite naturally varies from day to day and often dips during illness and in the toddler years. It is worth a pediatric review when poor appetite continues for weeks, when weight is not increasing or when your child also seems tired or unwell.
Growth Concerns
The most reliable way to know is to have height and weight measured regularly and plotted on a growth chart. A child who follows a steady curve is usually growing well. Falling away from their curve, or being much shorter or lighter than expected for the family, should be discussed with a pediatrician.
Developmental Concerns
Children reach milestones at different ages, but a child who is not doing what most children of the same age can do, or who loses a skill they had, should be reviewed. Parents do not need to wait; raising a concern early allows support to begin sooner if it is needed.
Skin Rash
Most childhood rashes are mild and related to viral infections, heat or sensitive skin. A pediatrician should see a rash that lasts more than a few days, is spreading, is very itchy or painful, or appears together with fever.
A pediatrician looks after the health of children from birth to adolescence. This includes routine check-ups, vaccination, growth and developmental monitoring, common illnesses such as fever, cough and tummy upsets, and the first assessment of longer-term conditions.
For scheduled check-ups and vaccines, and whenever you are worried: fever that persists, breathing difficulty, poor feeding, dehydration, a rash with fever, or concerns about growth, development or behaviour. If something feels wrong, it is reasonable to have your child seen.
A pediatrician is the right first doctor for most childhood health concerns. Families in Ahmedabad can consult a pediatrician at GROW Children Hospital's Bodakdev locations, and will be guided to a specialist if one is needed.
